Handing over the retainer case at the office

Vivera® are Align Technology's retainers, made from the same iTero™ scan as your aligners. They are clear, come out to eat and, according to the manufacturer, are stronger than a conventional thermoformed retainer.

They are defined with your plan at the consultation: how many sets, how often they are worn and when they are checked. Wear usually starts as full-time and moves to nights only, as indicated.

    At the end

    The final scan is used to make the retainers. They are handed over with their case and instructions.

    First months

    Worn as much as possible, as indicated, while the tissues stabilise.

    Afterwards

    Night-time wear. It is the routine that keeps the result long term.

    Care

    Cold water and a soft brush; never hot water (it warps the plastic). Always in its case when not in the mouth. Yearly check at the office.

The general recommendation in orthodontics is long-term retention, worn at night, because teeth move throughout life. The exact routine is set for your case.
If it goes back in with some pressure but fits, no harm done: wear it more hours for a few days. If it no longer fits, ask before forcing it.
With normal care they last years. If one cracks or warps, it is replaced from the stored scan.
In some cases a thin wire behind the lower incisors is combined with the removable retainer. It is decided case by case.
